heater fan problems

HI folks  i hear its a time consuming job to replace a heater fan (which i don't want to do if i can help it!!) so i wonder if any one can help me with a problem i have.

The fan still works but only when i put the switch to 3 it doesn't work on 1 and 2. It makes me think the fan is ok but is there a regulator/resistor that could be at fault. i replaced the switch ages ago that made no difference.

Cheers Dave/Hammy

Dave

Yes there is a resistor, but to its location i am unsure, you will need to trace the wire from the switch to the resistor.

It would most likely be the resistor as the fan work on one of the speeds but not all.

Hope this helps.

I'd put money on the resistor like Sean said.

The resistor is usually mounted on the motor itself close to where the wiring goes into the motor (usually 4 wires). The resistor is usually in the air flow to help keep it cool. It's a ceramic white thing that's wire wound.

Getting one might not be easy, be careful with second hand ones as this is quite common. German & Swedish only seem to do the complete fan.

HI Dan and Sean cheers for the advice. i can get the fan as you say from GSF. Funny how JK don't do one? Do you know if the resistor, reostat or what ever it's called comes as part of the new fan? if so much easier to just buy a new fan.

Hi Tina and ian hope you are both well. yes should be going to the Easter camp, hope to see you there. Do you have an e-mail address i can have to stay in touch?

Mine is djhammy62@o2.co.uk

Cheers

The best thing to do is ask GSF, I would have though it would do because it's usually part of the power assembly to the motor.

I had a quick look on eBay and there were resistors for Mk2 and Mk3 Golf / Jettas on there starting as little as £8. You never know, they might be the same as what you're after and the pictures will give you an idea of what you're looking for.

I just searched for "VW resistor", it should be cheaper than a motor and I noticed one of the auctions was GSF parts Birmingham.

hi mate , my t25 is a 1988 model and the resistor is behind the drivers headlight , by taking the front grille off you can unscrew the head light screws and its hiding behind there   enjoy !
