72 Bay will not start

Since before all the snow earlier this year my 72 bay has been sat, waiting....

Now I have got around to starting it - it just will not fire up.

I have a spark, I have cleaned and gapped the plugs.

I have fuel, if I take the pipe off the carb I get fuel out when I turn the engine over, not much - about 1/2 a cup.

I have not touched the timing or the dizzy, all is at it was.

I have replace the in line fuel filter.

Not sure what to try next, any ideas, anyone?

many thanks

Simon

i've been told that modern fuel perishes or breaks down or something, by my mechanic - so that won't have helped you start the engine after so long. i get the same sort of problem getting the van out for the mot in december.

Many thanks, I will siphon the old fuel out, drain the tank, take the opportunity to replace the rubber fuel lines and refill with some nice clean petrol. keep your fingers crossed!

What sort of spark are you getting at the points as it should be bright white? I would say it's more likely to be points, condensor or coil. You may have a spark but it's to weak to fire the fuel.

Fuel can go off over a period but it's not likely if you had plenty in the tank and it would still attempt to start.

Try just putting new points and condensor on first before going to the trouble of draining the tank and poss throwing away good fuel, (remember you MUST fit new points if you change your condensor)

Brian.

Thanks to all for posts,

I drained the fuel out, it was a bit manky, so kept to one side until can work out what to do with it, seemed to be a lot of water in suspension. The old carb had white waxy residue in the jets. And things have moved on, the new carb I fitted just would not work, so I cleaned up the old one and refitted. It started !!, but would not run on idele, would only run about about 200rpm . I arranged to get it to a tuner, but though I had best run the fuel line in properly first - big mistake.

My question is, the van starts fine, runs for 30 secs then stops again, then will start again after 4 or 5 cranks, then stops again.

Why oh why could this be?

The spark is nice and fat, but will order points, condenser & rotor arm just in case...

If you have one check the in line filter to see if it's blocked, if you on a manual pump take the pipe off and put it in a jam jar then get someone to crank the engine to see if you get a good fuel delivery.

Assuming your on Solex carb check the float setting is correct and set up the carb as per the manual as these carbs are factory set and can be a pain to set up as so many people have found out. If memory serves me right the bigger of the two adjusting screws should be about 1 and a 1/4 turns out then set the smaller screw to acheve about 800 rpm then just balance both till the engine runs smooth.

what area you in? as im in Southeast

Brian
