A load index of 82, corresponding to a MAXIMUM load rating of 475 kg, is less than half the front & rear MAXIMUM axle loads, of the 1968~79 VW Type 2; corresponding to ½ x 1010 kg (i.e. 505 kg) and ½ x 1300 kg (i.e. 650 kg) respectively.
A load index of 93, corresponds to a MAXIMUM load rating of 650 kg, which is why a load index of 96 or more, is typically specified; providing a 10% margin of SAFETY, to mitigate the effects of "weight transfer", under acceleration, braking and cornering!
A 185/55 R15 tryre, has an external rolling circumference, of 1836·2 mm, which is 10·3% smaller than the 2047·0 mm external rolling circumference, of "factory-standard" 185 R14 or 185/80 R14 tyres.
A 185/65 R15 tryre, has an external rolling circumference, of 1952·5 mm, which is 4·6% smaller than the 2047·0 mm external rolling circumference, of "factory-standard" 185 R14 or 185/80 R14 tyres.
For a given road speed, these substantially smaller tyres, will result in a faster revving engine and greater speedometer reading, compared with the use of "factory-standard" 185 R14 or 185/80 R14 tyres.
