The bus was purchased by the current keeper from the original and first owner in 1986; Victor and Stella Whiffen of Bridport, Dorset with only 50,000 miles from new and still in its original paint. The owner informs us before the long journey home, he and the Whiffens had a cup of tea in the camper and chatted about the bus and about one of the holidays they had in it. They had it shipped to South Africa for a four week touring holiday, then had it shipped back to the UK. The owner recalls ‘just before we said our goodbyes, I asked them if the sun roof still worked ok? The answer came back with no hesitation, ‘we don’t know as we have never opened it! ”

From 1986 to 2000 it was used for holidays and going to VW shows, completing another 20,000 miles before being dry stored until 2007 prior to the meticulous restoration.
From 1987 the vendor attended many VW shows, throughout the UK and Europe, always looking for original new old stock parts for the bus and managed to collect many rare parts for a future restoration. Also being a member of the split screen club since 1986, many specialists trusted to undertake the restoration were familiar faces.
One of the first jobs was to buy a frame to be able to turn bus on its side, in order to get to the underside. Cleaning the soft underseal with paraffin revealed very little rot and a lot of original factory paint! All the underside was media blasted and minimal welding was needed.
The top side of the body was soda blasted and media blasted where needed. The rear door and engine lid were soda blasted and no rot was found. It was left to a good friend to prepare and paint the body and had just finished painting a VW Hebmuller.

The interior was completely restored. Handmade wool head liner, original interior panel cards were carefully cleaned, rear seats and curtains were remade in a period look material (all original seat covers and curtains remain). The front bench seat has been recovered in original colour matched leather and all the Devon furniture is complete, including gas light and shade, gas burner in door, so-cool box and water tank.

All the mahogany wood has been hand French polished and new as original 9” square lino floor tiles have been laid.
All original chrome has been rechromed, including front VW badge, interior door handles and horn grill under the bus while all outside chrome door handles are new old stock including fuel door lock. All the aluminium deluxe trim is the original and has been polished.

The only item added to this very original bus is a set of new old stock front safari screens and all fixings, including new old stock wiper arm disengage mechanism.
The original engine has been completely rebuilt and a new old stock exhaust was powder coated in near original colour.

The owners aim was to refurbish as much of the original parts as possible and not to take the originality away from this beautiful bus.

This is only one of five known 23 window deluxe buses with original Devon interiors and one of two with rare ‘special order’ mahogany interiors and as you would expect after such a meticulous restoration is described as being in excellent order in every respect. Now showing only 70,000 miles from new and in the ownership of only 2 keepers from new it is finished in sealing wax red and beige grey with a contrasting blur grey and dark grey interior this has to be one of the rarest and finest examples in existence today.

A rare VW camper van could fetch up to £92,000 at auction next week.

The 1960 Volkswagen Type II 23 Window Split Screen Samba Deluxe Devon camper is the star attraction at Coys ‘Spirit of Motoring’ auction, which is being staged at Ascot Racecourse.

It is one of only five known 23 window deluxe vans with original Devon interiors and one of two with rare “special order” mahogany interiors.

Th camper underwent a meticulous restoration and is described as being in excellent order in every respect, finished in sealing wax red and beige grey with a contrasting blur grey and dark grey interior.

With only 70,000 miles on the clock and two owners from new it has to be one of the rarest and finest examples in existence today. It is expected to fetch between £82,000 and £92,000.

It is among 70 classic and collectors’ cars going on sale on October 11, including Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Ferrari, MG, Bentley and Rolls-Royce. The cars date primarily from the pre-war era to no later than the 1970s,

The sale will also feature a 1967 Austin Mini Mark II unearthed by Coys specialists in August, which has stood untouched and unused in a garage for 23 years.

The car was purchased new by a Mrs Tuffin, who used it until her death in 1991 and has not seen the light of day since then.

Chris Routledge, Coys managing partner, said: “It is the ideal investment and restoration project given that it has only covered 43,446 miles from new. At No Reserve, this will definitely attract much interest.”

Also on offer will be a 1934 Riley Nine Imp, estimated at £75,000 to £90,000, a 1972 Porsche 911S 2.4 Targa at £75,000 to £90,000, a 1933 Lagonda 3 Litre Selector Special at £80,000 to £90,000 and a 1963 Lincoln Continental Limousine Cabriolet from the ‘Musée automobile des voitures de chefs d’État’ at £70,000- £100,000.

Coys will also be auctioning a 1943 BMW 750CC R75 ‘Afrika Korps’ military sidecar. It comes complete with spare wheel, the stickers of the ‘Afrika Korps’ and the Italian libretto. It is expected to sell for between £45,000 and £48,000.

As thousands of Kiwi travellers have found on their European OE trips, the VW Kombi is like a house on wheels.

When Professor Ferdinand Porsche designed his Volkswagen “People’s car” in 1934, he never envisaged that 80 years on its variants might be worth as much, or more, than the sports cars carrying his name.

But that could be the case at Shannons Melbourne Spring auction on Monday, September 29 when an exhaustively restored and multiple award-winning 1966 VW Campervan named “Buster” is expected to sell for the price of an early Porsche 356.

“Buster” is a rare surviving “E-Z” Camper conversion based on an increasingly collectible “Split-Window” Type 2 Kombi.

Introduced in 1949 with the same reliable running gear as the original Post-War VW Beetle, the Kombi soon carved a niche as a reliable, versatile and endearing workhorse and it was available as a van, a bus and as early as 1951, as a camper, with a conversion by the German Westfalia company.

As demand for these campers outstripped supply – particularly in North America – other campers entered the market, including “E-Z” Camper built in Littlerock, California that cleverly transformed the Kombi into a veritable house on wheels, with a folding bed, tables and chairs, kitchenette, 55-litre water system and wardrobe.

The “E-Z” being auctioned enjoyed a long association with the original owner’s family before being inherited by their stepson who began the task of refurbishing the vehicle to better-than-new condition in the early 2000s.

The restoration was thoroughly documented by a detailed, step-by-step photographic record of all work performed, along with a comprehensive receipt file.

A new 1915cc engine fitted with Twin Weber carburettors and electronic ignition was installed, along with a replacement “Freeway Flyer” transmission and a CSP front disc brake conversion for added safety. Optimax deep cycle batteries were fitted, along with a discreetly hidden Alpine sound system.

“Buster” also comes with its original canvas annexe, twin Coleman stoves (still in their original packaging), the original (and still functioning) icebox along with various accessories such as anodised mugs, crockery and cutlery.

The factory left-hand-drive Volkswagen has only travelled a further 2400km since its rebuild was completed in 2001 and remains in truly remarkable condition.

Since being imported to Australia from California in 2011, “Buster” has has won numerous awards for its stunning presentation.

Shannons, that expects Buster to sell in the A$62,000-$72,000 ($69,000-$80,000) range, also attracts Kiwi buyers for its car auctions

Sculpture Rules: Royal College of Art 2014 Degree Shows Open

This year ‘s Royal College of Art degree shows are once again split over its two sites with Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Textiles, Jewellery, Ceramics and Glass being held at the Battersea campus while the more product based courses are still housed in Kensington.

Expectations are high from these Post Graduate students as some of the Art world’s most influential and important artists and designers are RCA alumni including:  Frank Auerbach, Peter Blake, David Hockney, Chris Ofili, Philip Treacy, Orla Kiely, Zandra Rhodes, Sir James Dyson and Sir Ridley Scott.  The ceramics, glass and textiles are always of exceptional quality.  As far as the Fine Art departments go, it seems to change year by year as to which course produces the most interesting and innovative work.  A couple of years ago it was Printmaking that stood out but this year it was clearly the Sculpture students.

The first work that greets you as you enter the Sculpture building is Skirting Board by Vesta Kroese (photo above), which is exactly that: a skirting board that runs from the reception area into the main gallery comprised of local leftovers, skipped artworks and fascinates as you recognise various tiles, pieces of plaster and blocks of wood in the mix.   I was captivated by the variety of materials used in the sculptures in the constant attempt to come up with something new. Jason Thomson even had a kitted out VW camper van in his piece called Journey (Top Photo) – all very Joseph Beuys (VW Transporter 1969),

Russell Hill used toothpaste to paint stripes down a wall, Aqua Fresh stripe I suspect.  I found Freya Gabie’s description of the material used in her work far more interesting than the piece itself. “Carpet taken from the floors of an unoccupied flat and deconstructed down to dust”, for your information.

I also particularly liked Josephine Callaghan’s C-type aluminium wall pieces (Photo Above).  Some of the disciplines tend to overlap.  I was surprised that these works were Sculpture and not Photography or painting and Meg Rahaim’s hand-made digital image objects in crocheted yarn were actually Printing (see photo with toothpase painting).

I have to say that I was disappointed by the Painting this year.  This might be because I expect so much from the RCA students but the work was, dare I say it, a bit dull. Always accomplished but there was little that stood out.  Of note was Isabel Yellin’s painting on mixed fabric, oil, wire, steel, toothpaste (Above) (there we have it again!), tape, spray paint, acrylic, charcoal and grout and Yvonne Yiewen Feng’s expressionist figurative works In the Eileen Cooper mould (another RCA graduate). see photo below
