York Dragway – Beetles v. Minis – Easter Sunday 31/03/2013

Happy Easter everyone .

Today, we’re off to the 18th annual Bettles v. Minis drag racing shootout up at York Dragway in North Yorkshire. We’ve been going most years and always have fun – although we’re not looking forward to the cold this year. Over the years we’ve seen some fast campers try their hand at the quarter mile too! If there are any today I’ll post some videos on the site.

To get there:

Please approach York-Raceway from the east (Hull), west (Bradford/Leeds) and south (Doncaster/Wakefield) via the M62 to junction 37 and follow the yellow signs. From the north please exit the York ring road at the A1079 exit for Hull and head south for 15 miles. Do not use sat nav until you exit the M62 at junction 37 or are approaching York from the north. Racetrack postcode YO42 4SS, Seaton Ross.

Gates open at 8:30am, Scrutineering and signing on opens at 9am, track opens at 9:30am. Track closes 5.30pm-6.30pm

’57 VW 23w Samba rescued and rolling


 

This 1957 Samba, was pushed into a lake in Norway by a local hotelier when its gearbox failed in 1974. Thirty years later enthusiast Morten Lund learned of the drowned Volkswagen and hired a remote-controlled submersible to search for it, discovering the Microbus lying face down at a depth of 15 metres. Undeterred, he hired divers and a mobile crane and lifted out his catch last summer. Now Lund faces an equally mammoth task restoring the Volkswagen to road-going condition. The determined and hugely optimistic enthusiast excitedly told Practical Classics magazine: “It took me less than 30 minutes to get both front wheels rolling, and the steering works perfectly… The cargo floor and cab are nearly rust free – just some minor holes around the edges.”
